Hair Extension “A”Grades (AAA, AAAAA, 8A 10A 25A 100A???) Explained

We have been in the hair extension industry for 12 years and the truth is, these “A”s dones’t mean much.
A while back, some European started using AAA as a standard of quality indication
1x A= Pure human hair of any grade/type, without synthetic or animal hair mix
2x A= Remy grade human hair which are mostly sorted and dyed colors
3xA = Virgin uncoloured hair in mostly double drawn ( at least back in the days before 2012)

Then people decided to copy this very method, but add one more “A”, to indicate that their hair is of even better quality.

Fast forward to now and we have, AAAAA+ and even 7A grade hair, but here is the real deal: these grades mean nothing and were created merely for marketing purposes. A supplier may supply higher quality “AAA” hair than someone selling 8A or 10A premium hair.

How to judge the quality of the hair vs the money you are paying for it

Single drawn vs double drawn
Single drawn hair is always cheaper than double drawn or premium drawn
Single drawn hair has over 80% of the hair that don’t reach its labelled length
Double drawn is 70%+ the same length reaching to the bottom ( 20% hair shorter than the final length)
Premium drawn is over 90% of the hair reaching its final length. This drawnage grade is very expensive as all the shorter hair is pulled out and thrown away. A 100g pack could be coming from 6-10 donors, which makes the hair expensive to collect.

Virgin vs Remy vs non remy

Virgin hair
is hair that is not colored, permed or treated with any chemicals. The longest lasting hair is proper virgin hair.

Most hair comes from Asia, which makes virgin hair naturally dark colors. So a natural black to medium browns are natural, unprocessed colors.
They come in straight, wavy and soft curls. Very few packs of hair comes in deep curls naturally.
Those fashion colors and blondes, over 99.9% are not virgin but dyed colors from black brown.
Very few naturally blonde hair that are virgin.

Super long lasting hair.
They do not tangle or matt easily
They can be colored or permed without suffering too much damage, but clients must be realistic with the bleaching expectations. From black to silver will do some damage to the hair, just like your own hair.

Some packs comes with grey hair strands, this is totally natural
Some have split ends, which is also natural

Remy grade
Remy grade is real hair that has been processed. The processing could be dye, bleach, perm etc.
They could be cuticle aligned, but sometimes they are not. This is very hard to tell once the hair is processed.
With European processing (expensive processing) the hair can be mostly the same as virgin hair
And cheaper processing factories they may not last as long from cheap chemicals.

A range of different color and texture can be brought from the shelf
Most of the color is uniform and factory standard shades
With good manufatoring, the hair can still be dyed darker again at home or with a box dye
The color does not fade, as they are cuticle tinted

They don’t last as long as virgin hair
Lighter/blonder you go, the shorter it would last.
Bleaching is not going to lift any hair but only damage it. The color on the hair will not come off.
Even dark colors last shorter than virgin dark colors, as they are bulk processed
Spcial shampoo and conditioner + treatment is needed to treat the hair.
You are saving money by buying cheaper but the care maintenance is much more ( comparing dark virgin hair to dark remy hair)

Wearing the hair
Only time tells the quality of the hair. Proper virgin hair does not tangle after a few washes. They will look the same over months, and with a little TLC and a trim they can become new again.

With clip ins or weaves, remy or virgin grades can be used without too much hassle
With bonded extensions, you should always aim for the highest quality hair possible, as managing the hair would be a dream compared to remy or just normal human hair grades.
When the hair is factory processed, the hair is treated quite roughly. Which they are going to need a lot of coating to make them nice.

Our advice? Ignore this marketing fluff and rely on real facts: weight, whether hair extensions are virgin, Remy or not. How long do you want to use them vs how much you want to spend, and if the place you get the hair from offer after care and guarantee etc.

A Beginners Guide to Hair Extensions

If you’re a first-time extension wearer, best would be to try on some temporary extensions first to see if you can wear them. A set of synthetic clip ins doesn’t cost a lot in case you don’t feel comfortable wearing them. Come into the store and let the stylist match to your color, you can also pay a small amount to try on some clip ins or wigs. This is all to save you money in-case your R8000 extension you just fitted is "not for you".

If you decide to go with fitted extensions, you should just have a few strands fitted first to see how they are before committing to a full head. Some times, some just cannot stand the feeling of the tracks or micro ring in the hair. Remember they are simply hair pieces, attached to your natural hair. They are foreign objects attached to your scalp hair.

Fitted extensions are considered high maintenance, the first time fitting usually would not last as long as experienced users.  Be prepared to spend more time each day styling your extensions and washing them. Most methods of bonds, micro rings and tape ins needs to be dried to 100%.

The highest grade of hair should be used for fitted extensions. They will last longer and also can be revived if they have been battered. We can also dye and bleach virgin hair to match to the style.

Always fit enough hair for the length/style you want. Most frequent issue with the fitting is the budget with amount of hair put in. If you don’t put in the correct amount of hair, the the end result will be mullet like and will not blend properly.

For example a client phoned and booked for 40 strands 60cm to be put in, so we did it. And it looked terrible. She was so unhappy with the result. She had 50cm and thick hair, which she wanted to go to 70cm. 40 strands only added a little rat tail at the bottom layer. The style needed 120 strand for a half head fitting on her thick hair. Nowdays in order for us to fit the extensions, you must come in for a consultation and some pictures of what you want, before going ahead and book for fittings.

Things to consider:

Fitted hair extensions don’t last forever, they have to be replaced, re-bonded etc every few months. Therefore they cost a lot more than just the hair you brought.

Clip in, halo, wigs can last much longer depending on frequency of wear, but they will also become damaged with heat, washing, coloring. They will need treatments.

Chemical processing will affect the lasting factor. If you bleach your own hair from black to blonde, it will become damaged. So does the hair extensions.

Washing, styling suddenly require a lot of time and effort. There is no such thing as a wash-and-go style when you have extensions. You're either curling your hair or straightening it to blend it all together. You can no longer wash your hair with random shampoo which can dry out the hair.

The extensions rubs the scalp and it can be itchy. and sometimes uncomfortable

Hair extensions are hair pieces attached to your natural hair/head by various methods. The hair comes in synthetic and human hair types in different grades, and methods including wigs, clip ins, ponytail add ons, keratin bonds, micro ring bonds, methods of weaving, braiding, glue, latex attachments, tape attachments etc.
Expectation from well fitted hair extensions can be increasing volume and length, also covering hair loss is certain part of the head.

Please remember, end of the day, these are pieces of hair are attached to your natural hair, They can cause some discomfort for sensitive scalps and those who are not used to having hair pieces attached to the hair.

Clip-In Extensions/ponytails, fringes halo extensions ( non permanent extensions)

How it works: you clip in the hairpiece to add volume or length to your natural hair and remove whenever you like
How long it lasts: with proper care, human hair clip-in extensions can last up to a year, virgin hair even longer. Synthetic hair can be 3-6 months depending on care.

The perks:low cost, easy to install and take out, adds volume and length to flat, thin, or short hair, and human hair clip-ins can be colored and curled.
No damage is done to the natural hair.
Very comfortable to wear
The drawbacks: You have to put it on every day, but this is not a disadvantage considering the large amount of effort needed to maintain permanent extensions, putting it on takes minimal effort.

Clip ins cannot blend well with blunt cuts, short hair, under cuts, non relaxed hair types. They also cannot cover crown hair loss ( a crown piece is used for covering the top)

Best for: first-timers and those who don’t have time to care for fitted extensions.
Average cost: R250-R5000 from synthetic hair to the top quality, longest length and thick hair.

Tape in extensions ( Semi permanent fitting )

Tape in extensions are attached with a strip of sticky tape type glue which makes a sandwich. Tape ins are very flat and comfortable to wear. These are ideal for thin hair.

How it works: your natural hair is sandwiched between the 4cm wide extensions and sealed together with a flat iron
How long it lasts: about 4–6 weeks before it’ll need to be removed and/or reapplied
Hair lasting factors: Dark colored hair last 4-6 fittings and light colored hair 2-4 fittings.

The perks: easy and fast to apply, lies flat, and feels natural. Ideal for fine hair

The drawbacks: The hair are more expensive than other types.
They must be dried properly to prevent sliding and they don’t hold well on oily hair.

Best for: Thin, fine, or short hair (short hair is going to cost a lot but it can blend well)

Average cost: Thin hair R2500-5000 and thick hair R5000-R10000

Weave or Braided Sew-In Hair ( for both ethnic hair and European hair types)

How it works: the stylist weaves your natural hair into tiny braids against your scalp, and then sews the extensions into the braids with a needle and thread. A partial sew-in means only some of your natural hair is woven into braids; some is left out. A full sew-in means that all of your natural hair is braided.

How long it lasts: about 4-6 weeks, then the hair can be re-fitted depending on condition.

The perks: Fast fitting and no damage to your natural hair. The hair piece is cheaper and thicker. They can also be reused or converted to clip ins.
Ideal for those who have medium to long hair to add some volume and length, or a full head weaving. You can wash these as often as you like.

Best for: All textured hair (half head weave/European weave needs shoulder length hair to blend, short hair cannot blend )
Average cost: R600 ( for a short weave) to R4500 ( for multiple packs of long weaves)

Micro wefts or Braidless Sew-In

How it works: the stylist loops each strand of natural hair through micro ring onto a weave of hair.

How long it lasts: about 3–6 weeks before it needs to be tightened

The perks: lays flatter than a weave, looks natural, allows for more flexibility in movement, and can be done in an hour
Best for: those with medium to long hair who want to add volume or length
Average cost: R500-3000 depending on how long and how thick you want them to be.

Keratin, U-Tip, or Hot Fusion ( Semi permanent fitting )

How it works: the stylist applies the hair extensions strand by strand, and uses a heating tool to melt your natural hair and the extension together.

How long it lasts: The hair last up to 12 months, but should be removed in 8–10 weeks to prevent breakage, matting, or stress on your hair. (Some salons don’t re-use the hair)

The perks: very flexible and blends easily with your natural hair, super long lasting.

The drawbacks: the glue can damage natural hair if the extensions are not properly removed or cared for. Not ideal for hair loss customers and fine hair.
It takes a long time to fit them and even longer time to remove them.
Don’t change your mind after fitting as it will be hard to remove them right after fitting.
Best for: Strong hair, anyone with hair longer than 20cm
Average cost: R3500- R10000 (depending on the quantity and quality of the hair you are buying)

Micro ring extensions ( Semi permanent fitting )

How it works: a stylist applies the hair extensions strand by strand with a micro ring, clamping closed onto your natural hair. The key to blending is to fit the same amount of hair extensions as your natural hair. You cannot save stands and wanting to extend length.

How long it lasts: about 8 weeks before it needs to be tightened to prevent breakage. A maintenance should be done at 3-4 weeks to tighten up loose pieces.
This method is glue free, fast fitting and easy to remove. The hair can be re-used depending on condition.

The perks: easy to add highlighted extensions (without dying your real hair), very flexible, and doesn’t require heat, glue, or chemicals so it’s easier on natural hair. You can remove these if you decide to remove them any time.
The drawbacks: Be aware that micro ring hair can slip and fall. The hair naturally expand when wet and shrinks when dry, after each wash this happens. So if the bonds are not dried right away, the ring will expand and slight down. Double ring method could be used for extra hold.
Best for: Anyone with hair should shoulder length, must be the same texture as the hair you are fitting.
Average cost: R3000-R6000/ full head
